It’s time for another Fanart Friday, the feature that never seems to occur on an actual Friday.
Series: Super Mahou (美和/Miwa) by Twyll
Medium: Watercolor (Holbein) on Paper (Daeler-Rowney Prestige HP)
I recently fell in love with the Super Mahou webcomic because of it’s fresh, amicable characters and simple, funny writing. Not a lot has happened in the comic yet, save character introductions, but luckily they are introduced in a natural, comedic, show-don’t-tell kind of way. Five girls with superpowers have found one other. What happens next?
I could never pick a favorite character, but I’m especially touched by Miwa. She is shy and flustered, her magical power is (seemingly) invisibility, and she does kendo. Interestingly, and perhaps in a way that resonates with her super power, Miwa is a trans* girl. It’s not a fact you would know in any way other than reading her “about” page, and that is satisfying. Her identity has no bearing on the content of the comic- she is just another one of the girls, and that’s something I appreciate. And her female identity doesn’t prevent her from pursuing sports. She is a quiet champion.
I wanted to paint a vignette of Miwa, and originally wanted to represent her power by making her whole figure fade with the watercolor. But after doing the line art, I thought making her outline the negative space might be even more interesting. I’m very pleased with the result, for an experiment. This was my first time trying out this new paper though, and I wasn’t happy with the absorbency (the perils of hot press!)
Go read Super Mahou!
Check out the art and reccomendations of the rest of Kori’s Fanart Fridays! My webcomic is Prince of Cats.

I kind of want to do one of these for each character. Is that overkill? I just love the designs so much…
